Known for his role as a cultural connector, Àbáse is the imagination of Hungarian, Berlin-based producer, composer and keyboardist Szabolcs Bognár. His music pulls from an eclectic blend of global reference points - an outer-national approach inspired by residencies in Brazil, New York, Ghana and South Africa, and collaborations with the likes Wayne Snow, Dumama, Guilty Simpson and Moses Yoofee.
Szabolcs’ work has drawn widespread critical acclaim from the likes of MOJO, DJ Mag, Soulection, Okayplayer and The Guardian, and been supported by key tastemakers and DJs including Gilles Peterson, Jamz Supernova, Benji B and BAMBII. His forthcoming 3rd full length album ‘Nefelejcs’ combines creative processes from his 2021 debut ‘Laroyê’ and 2024 follow up ‘Awakening’, marrying the sample-based, heavily produced style of the
former with the latter’s full band, live analog recording processes.
Musically, the record sees him come full circle, articulating his Hungarian heritage as a beatmaker speaking a global musical language. Across its 19 track run, Bognár blends samples and interpolations of Eastern European avant-garde, folk, contemporary classical and Ethno-jazz with a club conscious approach, inadvertently soundtracking a historic moment of democratic and cultural change in Hungary.
